Playbox Theatre open the 2023/24 season with the Young Production Company’s staging of THE SCARECROW AND HIS SERVANT in a version by Simon Reade.
Based on the tale by Philip Pullman, this is a delightful fantasy show for all ages. One night there is a thunderstorm. A tattered scarecrow is struck by lightning, blinks his turnip head in surprise and comes to life to encounter magical adventures with his new found ‘best friend’, his servant!
With variations from Cervantes’ classic novella Don Quixote, our heroes travel the land falling in love, righting wrongs, and discovering the essence of being human.
The production features 54 young members of Playbox Theatre in the Young Production Company (YPC) where the oldest actor is 14 years old. Director Mary King created the YPC in 1998 to stage The Ancient Mariner at Warwick Arts Centre giving the company’s young members their own experiences of production.
Mary King returns to direct THE SCARECROW AND HIS SERVANT with 13 year old Isaac Hope as The Scarecrow and 12 year old Jasper Dance as Jack, his Servant. The cast also features Milo Aggiss as Signor Cercorelli, Sam Huges-Webb as Signor Rigatelli and Stella Dube as the Sergeant.
To accompany THE SCARECROW AND HIS SERVANT, Playbox Theatre’s home, The Dream Factory, is hosting a Playbox Scarecrow Festival in the front-of-house areas.
