The school strikes of 1911 resulted from the appalling conditions for the working class in the schools of day. During a long, hot, summer, the children decided that they had had enough and across England and Wales 1,000s children went out on strike. It felt like a revolution, but it was short-lived, with the First World War just around the corner, and conditions set to become even worse. ‘Strikes’ shone a powerful light on the disparity between the classes in the early 20th century.
