Martyr is a troubling play by the superb writer, Marius von Mayenburg’s, and it was brought to the stage in an intense, disturbing, production directed by Mary King, and with an ensemble of excellent senior Playbox Theatre actors.

This moralistic tale of a teenager who seeks solace from adolescent confusions in the strictures of the Bible is treated without a hint of subtlety, rendering it a nightmarish narrative about the slippery nature of belief and the thin line between faith and fanaticism. Culminating in an onstage crucifixion, this production brought audiences from the comfortable and passive seat of the viewer, into an engaging arena, where perceptions of religion and belief are gravely challenged.
