Playbox Theatre’s pioneering gap year ensemble, Blue Riders, conclude their powerful programme of exploration with an evocative staging of Jean Cocteau’s La Voix Humaine—a solo performance that places the audience at the heart of emotional crisis, not just as witnesses, but participants.
Performed by seasoned Playbox actor, Ottilie Lampitt, this immersive reworking invites viewers deep inside the mind of a woman in freefall, as she clings to the remnants of a final phone call. Directed by Stewart McGill, the production marks the final Blue Rider presentation of the year, following their acclaimed reimaginings of Machinal, The Comedy Of Errors and the physical comedy of Chekhov’s Proposal.
Written in 1930, La Voix Humaine is one of Cocteau’s most personal and experimental works, created during a period of transition in his life and art. Best known for his boundary-breaking innovations across film, theatre, and poetry, Cocteau used this piece to explore the fragmented self, identity, and emotional isolation in the modern world. Its raw emotional landscape and technical simplicity have allowed for constant reinvention—and here, it becomes a vivid, immersive encounter.
This new treatment, first workshopped in summer 2024, now receives a full, intimate staging in The Studio at The Dream Factory, combining movement, sound, and psychological immediacy to render Cocteau’s monodrama more urgent than ever.
With seating strictly limited and the action unfolding in close proximity, this promises to be a rare and affecting theatrical experience.
