Playbox Theatre is delighted to announce that the company will tour to Tokyo in July 2025. This will be the company’s fourth visit to Japan, and the first for 18 years.
Hosted by the celebrated Model Language Studio, Playbox directors and senior actors will lead workshops, training events and will facilitate devised performances across the city using Playbox’s unique approach to the arts, enabling theatre skills and techniques to support English language learning for 100s Japanese children at a range of venues.
Model Language Studio was founded by its President, Masakazu Ota, in 1974, with a pioneering approach to learning English through lively, immediate, interaction, role play, and theatre. It currently supports the learning of over 3,000 children across Japan.
Playbox Theatre first collaborated with MLS in 1994, when Playbox hosted a tri-continental theatre festival, with companies from Asia and USA. The connection with MLS was a strong one, and Playbox actors toured to Tokyo several times in the subsequent years.
Announcing the tour, Playbox’s Artistic Director, Emily Jane Quash said today, “We are thrilled to be returning to Tokyo next summer, with a new generation of excellent Playbox actors. As a member of Playbox myself, touring to Japan in 1995 and exchanging with MLS was one of the most important and formative experiences of my life. I am so excited to be taking a really wonderful company on tour next summer, and I hope that it will be as life-changing for them, as it was for me.”
Playbox Theatre is proud to have received support from Daiwa Anglo Japanese Foundation and The Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation, whose help will enable this adventure to happen.
Full details of the Tokyo tour will be available in the new year.
