What is the purpose of the workshop?
The workshop is a space where actors can create and tell their own stories in sophisticated and exciting new ways. Devising is at the core of the practice with space to structure, develop, and experiment with ideas. During the week we will be developing our devising skills by creating new material that strengthens the use of imagination to not only participate in theatre, but to create it too.
What kind of person would you like to meet attending the course?
Overall, someone who is passionate about theatre! All aspects of theatre making are essential so if your passion is in the directing or writing – these are welcome skills too and I would love to see you there. A lot of the skills we are strengthening are directly related to GCSE & A Level drama, so the course will be highly useful to young people who see theatre in their future.
What will the format of the week be?
The mornings will be high energy with lots of games and movement work as well as working on ensemble skills. In the afternoon we will start building our devised pieces. We will look for inspiration from many different sources, modern/classical text, newspaper articles and cinema: working in groups to create a devised piece for a showcase at the end of the week.
What would you have appreciated about the course as a younger actor/theatre maker?
Having a space to try out ideas in front of an audience. Having guidance on how to use your imagination and all the skills required to devise.
What can those who take part, expect to take away?
They will leave with a devised piece that they can then develop further or the stimulus for other creative work. They will leave with creative tools and skills that they can then use in other artistic disciplines. The course is aimed at young people who are serious about the creation of theatre, so they can add to their portfolio and mature as creator of theatre.
